There are more truths in twenty- four hours of a person’s life than in all the philosophies. – Raoul Vaneigem in The Revolution of Everyday Life
The Importance of Preserving Family Stories
When I was young my father would tell stories about life in the Army Air Corps during WWII. Dad’s face would light up, his voice would soften, and I could tell that, despite the war going on, military life agreed with him.
Dad has been gone for over thirty years, and to my family's misfortune, none of his stories survived. Dad’s journal disappeared. There is no voice recording of him. And a fire destroyed the few home movies we had. All that remains are a few photographs of a rich life and a lost legacy. Don't let this happen to you. Honor someone - ask them to record their stories. And do it while the person is still able to recall them.
It’s never too late to pay tribute to someone you love, so I have begun my own personal family history project— a video to honor my father and preserve his memory for his grandchildren. To my delight, I recently discovered a golden gem— a story I never knew existed, while interviewing Dad’s boyhood friend. What golden nuggets might you discover while exploring your family history?

A Life Review Can Be Therapeutic
Many people find that in the process of telling their life story they are able to see the merit of their time here on earth, and the wisdom they are able to share with others. Studies show that it can be healing for the storyteller and for the family as they gain more understanding about their family history. Most people say how enjoyable it was to record their stories, and how comforting it feels to leave a legacy for their loved ones.
